And MY CAUSE is the core value of what I call “my passionate presription” and since it is also a paradigm for how I jumped started my life over “again” after years and years of being hammerd by being a dentist — this whole idea of finding a near perfect way to grow old quite literally “…saved my life and my living” so I love “prescribing it” to almost anyone who crosses my path. Maybe like you too.
I shout to high heavens every chance I get. You know like another dentist Paul Revere and the Pied Piper. I have found something of great value that the world has largely moved passed – and since so many other “boomers” are trying to find a great way to grow old – I think a Profitable Hobby is just about the best angle for an early (and better) retirement that there is.
Rather than push pills like I used to push in my practice, I now shower anyone who will listen with hope and enthusiasm for AMERICAS NEWEST HOBBY. There is nothing quite like finding something wonderful do do with our precious remaining days (and hopefully before it is too late). I stumbled onto another quote years ago…
BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE – FIND A MAGANIFICENT OBSESSION
Being all wound up over something that lifts your heart and soul, is such a magnificent way to live. When you have something that you are absolutley in love with, nothing is a greater motivator to take on life and living – and succeed. Something that fills your soul with excitement and anticipation is at the heart of anything passionate, but there is so much more. I’ve discovered that I do have some talents and a few eternal gifts and when you can develop what the heavens have blessed you with in your life, you unlock the very value as to why you were born. And from then on – your living will be on an ENCHANTED and SUPER CHARGED basis. Nothing is more worthy of your time and pursuit. Nothing.
I was half-way through my dental career (and by this time I was very discouraged with the whole “negative world” of being a dentist and I ran into a great little idea of carving eggshells with my dental drill. At first, it was just a crazy new little hobby, but the more I leaned my life in that direction (and for the first time) the more it gave back to me. Quickly I found some tremendous levels of satisfaction that I didn’t expect to find and from what I hear from other dedicated professional hobbiests – they fell in “love” with their hobbies too and also found an incredible gift they didn’t expect when they started too.
HAVING A GOOD TIME - IS MY JOB
I pursued my NEW FOUND HOBBY with a ton of enthusiasm and eventually it began to compeat with my practice for my time and interest and I started toying with the idea that I might actually have stumbled onto something that could “out perfom” my professional career in every way – even financially. It started to make my life very complicated.
I took the family on a trip to California and Disneyland in the motorhome and our first stop was in Lake Tahoe. I was up early the next morning going for a walk – THINKING ABOUT MY FUTURE PATHWAY. I wasn’t sure if my “dreaming” of another career was even reasonable. I was at a very tough point in my life. Finishing my dental career would have been easy. I owned my own building, I had a terrific patient load. My brother was in practice with me and all I would have needed do – is coast.
BUT I HATED GOING TO WORK EVERY SINGLE DAY
I was up early walking along the shores of that incredible Emerald Bay Lake and all of a sudden a guy ran by with a t-shirt that had something imprinted on it. It caught my eye and I literally turned around and ran him down. “Hey, can I see what you have written on your shirt?” I commented. “Sure,” was his reply. The words caught me right between the eyes.
HAVING A GOOD TIME – IS MY JOB
Nothing has hit my soul harder. It was a real “zinger” if there ever was one. I was searching with all my heart, and that little quote did it – that thought changed the entire course for the rest of my days. Nothing in my life has been more profound – enjoyment and satisfaction from the QUALITY OF OUR LIFESTYLE is the biggest issue in living – not how famous you are and how much money and posessions you own. I knew that all along, but now I had a motto to inspire all the rest of my days. I’ll share it with you if you like.
I think the real trick to have a quality life is FINDING AND TAKING the “…road less traveled” and unfortunately – few there be that find it – and I had found it. From that moment on I was headed down another road in life (and like the magical laurette FROST poem) “…that decision has made all the difference” in my living too. That wonderful moment made up my mind as to what I was going to do from then on – and I drew a mental imaginary line in the sands of my lifeline and made the final decision to end my dental career — and chase an artisitic pathway for the rest of my days. I never realized (then) just how profound that moment and decision would be for me and a whole circle of my friends. I have never regreted moment – or that decision from then on. (Now thirty-two years ago)
I spend a lot of time with my artistic circle these days an while I was trying to find another Dreamers Tool that would help my network find better ways to make that transition for themselves – I discovered a concept that I call CATALYTIC THINKING. Albert Einstein made the statement years ago (infact he made another powerful statement that you should consider here too) The first discribed the fact that if you “…go at your life with your old thinking, you are only going to get the same old results that you have always gotten.” NOT GOOD.
And the second, was the fact that IMAGINATION WAS MORE IMPORTANT THAN KNOWLEDGE and I don’t believe that most people really understand what he was actually saying. If the greatest mind of the twentieth century thought that “imagination” was the highest step on the ladder, should not we be giving this subject more attention. WAY GOOD.
In any chemical reaction (and the whole world and us in it) are just one big chemical and scientifically oriented reaction, there is almost always some sort of “other ingredient” that is necessary to trigger the reaction that will mix and produce the results that we are after. I think that is also how it works for us in our living as well. We can get all the ingredients perfectly together and often “…nothing happens” until we mix is the power of something that acts as a “catalyst” and sets of the reaction that produces results.
CATALYTIC THINKING is the real formula for personal alchemy
There once was a guy who tried to “hustle” a community in Germany and they caught him and put him in prision. He finally conjurered up a “new angle” to get himself released. He told the elders of the town that he knew how to “…turn lead into gold.” Some how they believed him enough to get him a studio and the materials he needed for this unique chemical formula (including the catalyst) and he set about this miracle he had discovered.
However, along the pathway he had started out on – he accidentally discovered “porcelin” and the firing of ceramics. And the commuity that had “let him out of jail” and started the ball rolling was “Dresden, Germany” the birthplace of the ceramic world. And in a way he discovered something just a worthy as gold in its own way. AND THAT IS HOW A HOBBY WORKS AS WELL and that is why I am so passionate about what it has done in my life. There was “gold” where I didn’t think – solid gold.
